I'm spending a research month in Buenos Aires, and as time permits I'm trying to visit milongas with live music. Yesterday I had the chance to listen to Los Reyes del Tango in El Beso. As a DJ I occasionally play 90's recordings of Los Reyes, which I like quite a bit, and so I was very curious to be able to listen to these legends "en vivo".

What an absolutely fabulous performance! These tango veterans (most them were born in the 1930's (!) and played in famous tango orchestras of the 1950's and on) rocked the room with incredible energy and passion! Every single song was danceable. Also, I was at awe at the mixture of professionalism and laid-back attitude I witnessed, starting with how they set up the room, to how they managed certain performance-elements of the show (i.e. at certain points the three bandoneonists, all of whom are in their 80s, would stand up and play the bandoneon on their left legs raised to their chair; but getting to this position was not so easy, so the sound technician would discreetly help with it). Theirs was one of the best live tango music performance I've ever experienced.

The members, especially the pianist, who was also in charge of putting together the sound equipment, were also super friendly. I arrived to the opening of the milonga to be able to sit close to the orchestra, and so I had the chance to chat a bit with the musicians while they were preparing for the show. I mentioned that their rendering of El Huracán is one of my favorites. But I would have never dreamed that, upon arriving to El Huracán in their repertoire, the orchestra would graciously dedicate the song to me!

Gracias for an excellent evening! This has been a very good start for my stay, and I'm looking forward to more live orchestra experiences in Buenos Aires.
