How to Build ArduPilot Source Code for Pixhawk

I've been trying to get HIL working for Pixhawk so that I can test Inverted Flight with my Bixler plane. More info on Inverted Flight can be found here:

This has sent me down a rabbit hole trying to get HIL working with Pixhawk. Apparently from my research ArduPlane 3.4 and 3.5 don't work with HIL, but 3.3 does.

I'd prefer to test this via HIL before I go to the field with my Bix. Unfortunately the 3.3 plane firmware isn't available so I've been forced with building it myself. I wanted to share what I've learned as it relates to building ArduPlane source code for Pixhawk.
