Even if Vladimir Putin's fourth presidential term ends in 2024, he will almost certainly be forced to step down sooner, should he become ill. 

Well, it's becoming clear that the current President of Russia is not only aging or losing support, but he may also be developing very legitimate health problems like Parkinson's disease or even cancer, in addition to being senile.

But, even if he's in good health, let's believe this,  will he stay in power long enough to run for an office in the next election? Let's consider this scenario.

Stepping down to a PM's position is time-consuming for a 70-year-old Putin.
He might run for office for the third time in a row, however, on the condition that he manages to change the Constitution within 12 months to introduce new changes.  But the question here is not if Vladimir Putin is unwell or not, but rather when he will step down and who will follow him.

So Putin's next critical task would be to appoint a loyal successor who would carry on Putinism after the inventor.
