Last week Apple's CEO Tim Cook sent out a note to employees saying they would need to return to the office on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays starting in this fall. Most employees can work remotely twice a week and they can also be remote for up to two weeks within a year, pending their manager's approvals.
Apple employees quickly pushed back against returning to the office sending their own letter stating their disagreement and as well as the feeling of not just unheard, but at times actively ignored by the management. While this return to office saga continues and nobody knows how to all ends up and where it's heading to, let's just wait and talk about this whole confrontation between employees and companies. I will share my opinion as an HR person of what I see as the best solution to this "problem" and you will know it if you keep watching my video till the end.
A Morning Consult survey conducted this May found that 39% of surveyed 1 thousand people would consider quitting their jobs if their employers weren’t flexible about remote work moving forward. Among younger employees this figure is higher- 49 percent stating they will quit their jobs if not given an option.
Other service-providing platforms and websites such as Fiverr, Upwork, and FlexJobs have witnessed a massive influx of people seeking new jobs that will suit their new needs. And the gig economy is booming. Individuals now earn several times higher than when they work their regular corporate job.
Apple wants to implement a hybrid type of work and will have their employees return to office buildings three days a week, with the option to work remotely twice a week starting September. And with insurmountable corporate generosity, they will add 2-weeks of work-from-anywhere benefit.
Hybrid is when you work 5 days a week and you can choose which days you gonna come to the office. It may be 2 or 3 times per week. I would actually implement 1 day of mandatory presence in the office and make the most of this day: plan meetings, employee hangouts, and celebrations, but let people choose the rest of the days.
Apple - sees some benefits of such mandatory workdays such as helping to take the guesswork out of knowing when colleagues will be on-site, to predict when resources such as janitorial or food services will be needed.
It makes no sense when a tech giant of Apple’s level doesn’t know how to track office spaces, how to track employee performance, how to provide food and sanitary measures.
And I don’t see any point in specifically returning tech employees because Twitter, Facebook, and Square are already announced they will let their employees work remotely forever if they choose to.

What is the possible solution to save the workforce market from collapsing? As I see it, let employees choose where they want to be. Simple as that. It’s just another industrial revolution and this is a tight job market. Otherwise, you will lose them to your competitors who provide more inviting working conditions.

People still need real interaction and maybe one day they decide they want to spend more time there. There’s no consensus on the optimal balance of workdays at home and in the office- it’s not true when the media is trying to sell you the idea that there are more benefits of working at the office than at your own place. It’s just not backed up by the data and not proven by time. Give it at least 5 years and we can speculate what’s better, but not today. The only thing I agree with is that the Least experienced workers need the office the most. Those with less experience up to 5 years roughly will need to be there because they will benefit the most from company training programs than their more experienced colleagues. But for those who are quite experienced and established professionals, their work ethic and corporate culture, and sense of belonging and loyalty and efficiency will not change, it may even grow.
