How to Paint a Wet in Wet Flat Wash in Watercolour Step by Step - for Beginners

This is an excerpt from my online course "Introduction to Watercolour Basics ~ Watercolours Made Easy" https://kendraart.com/courses

In this course you will learn all the techniques needed to build a solid foundation in watercolour, and how to overcome common struggles that beginners normally encounter. You will see each technique demonstrated in a step-by-step, easy to follow manner with a pace specifically geared towards beginners. I demonstrate everything twice so you can relax and watch the first one and then paint along with me.

The course includes over 10 hours of video instruction as well as 6 e-books adding up to over 320 pages of comprehensive step by step notes.

In this excerpt I'm showing how to mix water into your paint and how to paint a wet in wet flat wash. First, mix some cobalt blue by gently scrubbing the paint with a wet brush and bringing it into your mixing area. When you dip your brush in water, add it to your palette rather than to your well. It helps prevent your paint from sitting in a pool of water and dissolving.

Keep adding water and pigment until you have a rich pool of blue paint. With your flat brush, wet the top left section of your paper evenly with clean water. You want the paper to be shiny and glossy but not drippy. Go this way and that way with your brush to make sure the water is evenly spread
out.

Tip your paper up to the light to make sure you haven’t missed any spots. Once the paper is evenly wet, fully immerse your brush in the paint, and starting at the top of your paper, paint a brush stroke across the top. Paint another line below that one, just overlapping your last brush stroke. Overlap each last brush stroke, making your way down the section until the whole rectangle is filled. Try to resist the urge to fix or fiddle. Use a paper towel to soak up the extra paint around the painting. Don’t blot the painting, just wick around the edge.

This is called a wet in wet flat wash because it is painted on wet paper. The next step will be to paint a wet on dry flat wash. By the end of the course we will complete 22 paintings as well as cover how to steer clear of muddy washes, avoid unwanted streaks and backruns, add details without overworking, keep the light in your painting, "erase" an accidental splatter, and more.

I'm using 140lb Arches cold press watercolour paper, a 1/2" flat brush, and Da Vinci cobalt blue which had dried in my palette.
