Major traffic congestion in Newtown & Mount Cook, Wellington. Adelaide Rd Closed. May 16, 2023.

Commuters from the southern suburbs of Wellington (including Newtown, Berhampore, Island Bay, Houghton Bay) were greeted with a surprise traffic diversion this morning. Adelaide Road has been closed throughout the whole day and into the evening, due to a major fire incident at the Loafers Lodge hostel which occured overnight. Causing major delays at the nearest major traffic light intersection next to Countdown Newtown (Riddiford St, Adelaide Rd, John St).

The section of Adelaide Rd between Hall St and John St was open only to northbound bus services this morning. With car commuters taking Hanson St and Tasman St to get around, streets not normally designed for heavy traffic like Riddiford and Adelaide.

Bus services were diverted through Mount Cook to get into the city. This affected children getting to school too, this morning. With some schools/students given the day off, due to the proximity of the incident.
