Episode No 33 - Lion warfare in Africa: Toulon vs Southern (Selati) Pride
Ranger’s Report:
The recent arrival of 3 males from Toulon in the south has also stirred up the pride dynamics. It has shifted the Sparta and Southern prides closer together in the central area of Londolozi. These 3 males have not met with the new Majingilane coalition but they have put pressure on the Southern pride. The Southern pride have partially split owing to pressure from the 3 males from the south. The pride is occasionally seen together but more often than not they are split up into small fragments. The overall pride still maintains 14 members including 5 sub-adult males. (2010)
On one occation the Southern pride met one of these Toulon males, the dominant one. Without any warning the females together with their 5 sons attacked the lone intruder. All what was left to the Toulon was a retreat. Some times later the 5 sub-adult males will leave the pride. The brothers moved into the territory of the Majingilane males and payed a great price: the 5th brother was killed. After moving to the west and keeping a low profile, on March 16th 2012 the notorious Mr. T was killed by them. Now they were the rulers of the once Mapogo kingdom. They will go down in history as the Selati.
The dominant Toulon returned back to his brothers and they finally took over the Charleston pride until the KNP males Freddy & Limper arrived. The Lion dynamics of Sabi Sands is unique and breathtaking ....without doubt!
