Driving the L1 Commuter Train to Spikkestad, a 4K Cab Ride in Norway

See a Train Driver's View in Norway in this cab ride, a führerstandsmitfahrt during rush hour with not even a half full train. I wonder what the railways will look like once we can leave this pandemic behind us.

This was filmed in a bit of a rush since the Type 72 has proven to be a real camera-killer. So far I've failed 6 times to film it due to different circumstances such as overheating, bad camera placement opportunities or poor light conditions. My plan was to shoot on wednesday, edit on thursday and upload on friday. But luck would not have it this way and so I spent the entire friday evening editing this for you guys instead, I hope you will forgive it being a day late and missing features like the real time speedometer.

We start this video in Spikkestad and head out on to the Spikkestad Line. This line originally continued all the way to Drammen, but the rest were demolished when the Lieråsen tunnel opened. Now Spikkestad is the terminus and the line is now named for it instead. We take this line to Asker where we exit onto the Drammen line which we will take to Oslo Central Station. There we head up the Main Line to Lillestrøm before we turn around and go back out again. As we arrive at Oslo we cut to footage from earlier that day when I started my shift.

The L1 is the most intense service in Norway. 31 stops and only 15 minutes at each end to turn the train around. Usually we have no more than one and a half trip on this line in a day before we get a break and go on to something a bit calmer. Most stations are located only 2 minutes apart and it is usually packed with people all day long. The Type 72 is usually a reliable train, but it does not have the comfort or the peace of mind that you get on more modern trains.
