The Kennecott Bingham Canyon mine Visitor Center - The Worlds Largest Mine

The visitor center at the Bingham Canyon Mine closed when they had the world's largest cave in. The mine is now as wide and deep as the Grand Canyon!

The Visitor center reopens in the spring of 2019, just in time for the visit by the "Big Boy" the worlds bigger steam locomotive on May 10! AND the NMRA National Convention in July 2019 which will have the tour on the convention schedule. The visitor center was opened in the late fall of 2018 for a few days to test the format, check safety and let the staff meet the public. AND we were invited!! AND so are you.

The new visitor center is located in the pit, right next to the massive slide - cave-in that closed the mine so that visitors can also see what ended up being the largest ever man made landslide, well over a mile long and over 3000 feet high!!! The mine has also now passed the 4000 feet deep mark, not just the worlds largest man made excavation, but by far the worlds largest man made hole!

The new rules at the mine bar all private vehicles from the property. ALL personal car and trucks are parked in lots, the main mine lot at the site of the old town of Lark. Karyn's mom grew up in Lark, a town that no longer exists, berried under a thousand feet of mine debris.

The visitors will be transported to the visitor center in a fleet of 10 shuttle buses. The new gift shop is located at the Lark Gate and so you can visit it without taking the tour of the mine.
