Repairing Posterior Cavities Esthetically with BULKfill

In this Cosmedent Tip of the Month video, Rhodri Thomas, BDS uses Renamel® BULKfill to repair two molar cavities with beautiful results.

In this case, there are cavities on both the first and second molar. First, Dr. Thomas etches both teeth and then applies a bonding agent to the molars.

Dr. Thomas fills the second molar first with Renamel BULKfill. He is able to apply it in one layer because this material has a 4mm curing depth.

Once filled, Dr. Thomas uses the ball burnisher instrument to create an initial adaptation and then give a slight cuspal incline. He then sculpts the cuspal fissure pattern using the posterior occlusal instrument.

Once basic form and anatomy are done, Dr. Thomas takes the #3 Brush to create details, forming a natural tooth structure.

He addresses the first molar in the same fashion, filling it with BULKfill and sculpting anatomy with instruments and the #3 Brush. In this case, he is using a simple sectional matrix at the interproximal since it is a Class II cavity.

After adding the final anatomy details, Dr. Thomas cures the BULKfill. He uses Medium and Superfine FlexiPoints with Enamelize Polishing Paste to finish and polish the restoration. His final touch is adding a little bit of stain into the fissure pattern for a warm, natural look.
