The Truth about Shadows and Highlights in Landscape Photography

Time and time again while running workshops, I see participants reducing highlights by 100 and increasing shadows by 100. When asked "Why?" - I've never had a satisfactory answer, other than, "that's what I learned how to do while watching a YouTube Video."

For me that's not an answer. Let's look at Why...
