The Defender 110 is cool, but the version that the Land Rover faithful have been waiting for is this: the 2021 Defender 90, which runs on a dramatically shorter wheelbase. Just like the LWB version, the SWB Defender is a thoroughly modern vehicle, with an adapted aluminium-based platform offering a variety of engines, including this strong 294kW (394 hp) P400 inline-six petrol and, soon, a supercharged V8!

But is the new Defender really worth as much as five Suzuki Jimnys? And should you consider retro-themed off-roading rivals like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, or even Land Rover’s own Range Rover Sport?
