The latest episode of #ITCH has The Chieftain teaching us all about the Panzer I.
Panzer 1 gave the Germans their first domestic taste of modern tank operations. 1,175 Panzer IAs were built in 1935 and 1936, of which 15 were sold to China. However, they started being replaced by bigger and better tanks over time such as the 38(t) or the Panzer III. By the time Barbarossa started, there were still 300 on strength, but by 1942, a program was well underway to convert the chassis to other purposes.
Two additional types of Panzer I gun tanks were created, the 1C, or VK 6.01, and the VK 18.01, the 1F. The first was an exercise in speed, the latter, an exercise in armour. Neither saw service in particularly significant numbers, only a couple score of each being manufactured.
