What are federal CJA lawyers?

CJA Lawyers are lawyers who have certain training and meet certain qualifications to take federal court appointments in criminal court. This is beyond the Federal Public Defender. There are Federal Public Defender offices in Federal Court the same as there are in State Court, and these are people that are employed full-time to represent people who are charged with a federal crime who cannot afford to hire their own lawyer.

The CJA Lawyers, that’s usually what they’re called, are the extension of the Federal Public Defender’s Office. These are private lawyers who meet the qualifications and have been selected by the Federal Courts to be eligible to accept federal court appointments. Many times, this comes up when someone is arrested, because they must have a detention hearing and a probable cause hearing within, you know, two to three days at the most. And so, usually a CJA panel lawyer will show up to assist. You can use the lawyer at that point or retain your own lawyer – it’s up to you. But it’s important to know who those lawyers are and what their role is.
