Exploring Abandoned Islands in Japan (featuring cute cats)

Japan consists of 6,852 islands, 430 of which are inhabited. In recent decades young people have moved away from rural islands to big cities like Tokyo and Osaka. Some industries that existed on small islands - like silk farming and mining - have moved away to other countries. Mice-hunting cats were important on fishing and silk farming islands; now their descendants occupy deserted neighborhoods on some islands.
