African Horizon: Kenya - Lamu Port - Infrastructure and Economic Growth
African Horizon is a weekly NRCI original series released every Friday. NRCI´s founder and CEO Arne Elias Corneliussen presents his perspectives on geopolitical, economic, financial and security developments in Africa.
In this program he examines the opening of Lamu Port in northeastern in Kenya in June this year. Lamu Port is part of a wider economic corridor - Lamu Port - South Sudan - Ethiopia - Transport (LAPSSET) which connects Lamu Port with newly built roads across northern Kenya to South Sudan and Ethiopia. Road development continues in some parts of the corridor. There are also plans to build a pipeline and railway corridor. This opens up an important network of transportation and economic corridors in northern Kenya which connects into South Sudan and Ethiopia, driving economic growth in the future. This initiative is particularly important because northern Kenya lacks infrastructure, and thus this new LAPSSET Corridor provides new infrastructure and economic development in this region.
Lamu Port opens up for exports and shipments from June 15 this year with three berths completed. These three berths provide 1,2 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit (TEUs) capacity. Kenya plans to build 32 berths in Lamu Port totaling 20 million TEUs. Lamu Port and Mombasa Port, which also undergoes new development with the building of a second container terminal expected completed towards end of 2021, strengthen Kenya´s position as an important logistics hub in East Africa.
