African Horizon: Infrastructure and Logistics in Kenya, Uganda, DRC and South Sudan

African Horizon is a weekly NRCI original series released every Friday. NRCI´s founder and CEO Arne Elias Corneliussen presents his perspectives on geopolitical, economic, financial and security developments in Africa.

In this program he examines infrastructure developments across Kenya, Uganda and into DRC and South Sudan. Recently Kenya and Uganda reached an agreement to extend the railway from Malaba along the Kenya - Uganda border to Kampala in Uganda. Today the railway extends from Mombasa along the Kenyan coastline to Nairobi and onwards to the Naivasha Inland Container Depot (ICD) and from there they will build a link railway to the existing railway station in Longonot. Currently they are upgrading the 460 km old railway from Longonot to Malaba by the border with Uganda.

From Tororo along the Malaba - Kampala railcorridor - Uganda with partners will build a railway to Gulu in northern Uganda where there is a logistics hub. From Gulu they could also build an additional railway corridor into South Sudan in the future to reach Juba. Uganda also plans to build a railway from Kampala onwards to Kasese near the border with DRC. There are also concrete plans to build roads from Uganda into DRC. That connect with the railway corridor built from Kenya. This enables logistics to be transported from Mombasa in Kenya through Uganda and into DRC. These infrastructure plans will take approximately 5 years to complete and will drive economic growth in the future.
