201. Dowel pins make joints tighter and stronger #mtbitesize #dowel #pin #drawbore

Glue and clamps are the most common way we join wood together. But we can manipulate our joints by using dowels to get stronger connections. Draw boring is a technique that’s been used for centuries for mortise and tenon joints, but it can be used easily where pieces overlap each other. A pin is inserted through both pieces, mechanically locking them together. Like the dovetail joint, a draw bored joint makes it much more difficult for the joint to pull apart.

But unlike the dovetail joint, using the draw boring method can actually make your joint much tighter. To illustrate this, we’ll make a simple half lap to show how the edges pull together. First I’ll drill a hole through the first half of the lap. I’ll push my laps together and mark the second piece with the brad point bit I used earlier. I’ll make a second mark slightly closer to the inside edge of the joint and drill it out. With a dowel, I’ll add a taper so that it’s easier to hit the second hole…and now you just have to hit it in. As the tapered dowel slides in, the two boards are squeezed together giving you a tight joint. Now all you have to do is cut both sides of your dowel and you have a joint that cannot be pulled apart.
