Get the Most Out of Therapy! | Kati Morton

8 ways you can get the most out of your time in therapy!
1. Be picky: When deciding on who you want to work with, don’t just settle for the first person you see. Know that you should feel easily connected with your therapist. In the same way you would a new friend, and you should feel like they are on your team, working with you towards your goals. This means they should remember your name, your goals, and check up on how well you are moving towards them.
2. Have an idea of why you wanted to come / what you want to gain or get rid of: Obviously we don’t need to know exactly what we need to talk about or do each session, but we do need to know what symptoms or issues we want to talk about.
3. Be honest: I know this one can be really hard, and we can struggle to talk about things we may have never talked about before. But do your best! Even if your best is just telling them that you have some things you would like to talk about, but don’t feel ready. Just be as open as you can about your process so they can help you when you need it.
4. Set goals: Even if that goal is just to shower that week, or to make it to therapy and talk openly. Just make sure that you are working towards something and you have check ins with your therapist about your goals and how they are coming along.
5. Set boundaries and uphold them: I had to add this to the list because many of us struggle with attachment to your therapist, or worry how much is too much communication in between sessions. Remember, your therapist should not be at your beck and call, because they have a life too!! And if you are relying on them emailing, calling or texting you back all the time in between sessions, then maybe you need a higher level of care. The entire goal of therapy is to get you to a point where you don’t need it anymore.between your sessions, so you gain confidence and are able to grow.
6. Do your homework!: If we aren’t putting in the work outside of therapy you are missing out on a lot of time! I mean think about it. You are only in therapy for one or two hours a week, and on your own for the rest. Make the most of that time.
7. Take responsibility for yourself: I know this may seem obvious, but you would be surprised how many times a patient of mine will get angry at me because they aren’t getting any better. Meanwhile they are not doing any of their homework, canceling sessions last minute, and not sharing much when they do come in. You are the creator of your future, you are the one that is going to have to do all of the hard work.
8. No judgement: Therapy is hard work! Trust me, I know! Ignoring everything and just pushing through can be a lot easier in some ways, but putting in the time and effort is the only way to start feeling better. So be patient, kind, and gentle with yourself as you navigate your path to recovery. You will be trying out new tools and techniques for communication and relationships, and it will be hard at first, and you may fall back into old habits. Just remember that you didn’t form these habits overnight, so it’s going to take awhile for you to form new ones.
