IBM Announces Bold Energy Vision at Third Annual SERI Conference

IBM Research hosted the third Annual Smarter Energy Research Institute (SERI) Conference, a signature event with more than 60 clients from 30 companies and institutions, on June 17 and 18 at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center. The theme that resonated at the conference was that energy systems are at a disruptive inflection point and face new challenges. Data and analytics will transform the energy domain in helping to face these challenges.

The conference included three keynotes, eight technology demonstrations and two panels. The Chair of the New York Public Service Commission, Ms. Audrey Zibelman, presented a keynote called "Reforming the Energy Vision (REV)" asserting that "we're moving away from a centralized grid.” And an IBM keynote described Opus, a framework for orchestrating energy systems of the future. Two special sessions led by industry experts debated grid resiliency and how energy systems will evolve in the future. Eight demonstrations were each co-presented by an IBMer and a client in the THINKLab.

SERI, founded in 2012, accelerates innovation by collaborative partnerships between IBM Research and forward-thinking utilities. The new SERI vision and partnership model announced at this conference received a boost by the affirming, encouraging and enthusiastic reception from clients.
