The Russian Lord of the Rings is Weirder Than You Think (Part 1/2)

You’ve probably already seen bits of the 1991 Russian Lord of the Rings adaptation, but trust me, if you haven’t watched the whole thing, then I don’t think you truly understand how truly weird the Soviet LOTR movie is.

So as a public service to ‘video essay’ YouTube, I’ve done a deep dive and watched the full movie of the Russian LOTR adaptation (with English subtitles, thankfully) – parts 1 and 2.

This video, like The Lord of the Rings itself, is in three parts. The first part looks at the history of the Russian LOTR and explores how this came to be in the first place. Part two is my overall reaction to the Russian LOTR and some general observations about the film. Part three is where I’ll walk you through the best moments in the Russian LOTR because trust me, there are some great ones.
