Strathy Point Lighthouse, Sutherland (An Incredible Place to Stay!)

Turn off the NC500 and experience the wild attraction of Scotland's far north coast with a stay at the Principal Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage at Strathy Point, Sutherland.

This is surely one of the most dramatic self catering options in Scotland, surrounded by crashing waves and with outstanding views west to Cape Wrath, north to Orkney, and east to Dunnet Head, the most northerly point of the British mainland.

Located on a rocky peninsula, just off the famous NC 500 route, Strathy Point Lighthouse is now deactivated, allowing tourists to gain a tiny insight into what life would have been like for the team of lighthouse keepers on Scotland's northern fringe. The weather here changes in an instant and a calm, clear seascape can turn into a rising swell and a howling gale in the time it takes to brew a pot of coffee. None of this bothers the passing porpoises, dolphins and whales, nor the dive-bombing gannets.

Within a short drive of the lighthouse lie some of the best beaches in the Northern Highlands, at Strathy, Melvich, Bettyhill and Torrisdale. The rolling waves attract surfers from far afield but most of the time the beaches are deserted, even in the summer months.

Venture inland and discover the Forsinard Flows National Nature Reserve. This is one of the largest blanket peat bogs in the world. It is a landscape that is both bleak and yet teeming with life.
