Amblyopia is an Eye Condition, in which there is partial loss of Vision without any visible organic defect of Retina.

Whenever there is some amount of loss of vision of eyes, there is definitely some organic cause, or Retina or the screen on the back side of eye may show some changes that are visible with the help of an Ophthalmoscope.
But in Amblyopia, there is no such organic defect seen.
Retina may look normal when seen with an Ophthalmoscope.
It’s also called LAZY EYES at times.

If we analyse the characteristics of Amblyopia, we will see that:
It’s mostly found in Children and early young age.
Usually occurs in one eye. Rarely occurs in both eyes.

There is no redness of eye.
There can be big difference of spectacle powers of eyes. And,
There can be high spectacle powers in both eyes.

Since birth or early childhood, there can be:
Cataract or opacity of Lens inside the Eye,
Squint in one Eye, and haziness or partial opacity of cornea.
There may be family history of Amblyopia, meaning Parents or near family members may have the same eye condition.

There are mainly four types of amblyopia.
1. Strabismic Amblyopia or amblyopia because of squint,
2. Anisometropic amblyopia - due to big difference of spectacle powers,
3. Ametropic Amblyopia -- High Spectacle Power in both Eyes
4. Stimulation Deprivation Amblyopia -- due to Obstruction to light path of eye.

Parents are also advised to take care of eyes of Children, and take the children to ophthalmologist for routine eye check up.
