Over a period of decades, Beethoven constantly returned to the genre of the bagatelle, which he called ‘trifles’ but which actually meant a great deal to him. Beethoven’s aim to publish several short and contrasting pieces together is already apparent in the collection of seven Bagatelles op.33, published in Vienna in 1803. One invariably notes in these pieces a certain concentration on one idea at a time, a momentary expression; this seems more important than the motivic working.

Durant plusieurs décennies, Beethoven ne cessa de se consacrer aux bagatelles, ces "petits riens" qui, en réalité, comptaient beaucoup à ses yeux. L’ambition résolue de faire paraître au sein d’un même recueil plusieurs pièces brèves riches en contrastes transparaît, dès 1803, avec la publication des Sept Bagatelles “pour le Pianoforte” op. 33. Chacune des pièces du recueil laisse affleurer la volonté de se concentrer sur l’idée, sur l’expression fugace qui lui est propre ; cette focalisation des moyens expressifs sur un point paraît revêtir une plus grande importance que le travail sur les motifs.
