Anakin Skywalker stands outside of the chancellor’s office as he watches the news on the holofed. An alliance was at last brokered between the Hutts and the Republic against the CIS. The report emphasizes the contributions that he and his new Padawan, Ahsoka, made in this effort. By rescuing Jabba’s son from Ventress, he managed to convince the Hutts to throw their lot in with the Republic.

They call him a hero, but he does not feel like it. While the Jedi inform him that this treaty is critical for the war effort, and he certainly understands that, it still feels like a betrayal. The Hutts were responsible for enslaving him and his mother. Though they never owned him directly, they ruled the planet and ran the system that made it possible. To be working with them now and to have helped Jabba like this doesn’t sit well with him.

Finally, the door opens for Mas Amedda to step out, beckoning Anakin to head inside while he leaves him and the chancellor alone. Palpatine spreads his hands in a greeting.

Palpatine: Ahh, Anakin. I see you have read the reports. Many in the Republic are overjoyed by this success. With the recent chaos, seeing a bright spot like this will help ease many minds. And yet, I suspect you are not one of them. What is wrong?

Anakin: This bright spot you speak of doesn’t feel like one. Working with the Hutts? They’re a crime syndicate, and you know it. How sure are we that they can be trusted?

Palpatine: You are angry at them. I do not blame you for that, my boy. The Hutts are an unsavory group, to say the least, but a powerful and influential one.

Anakin: Yes, I understand that. They have space lanes and planets we can use as bases, the Jedi Council explained to me. But does that suddenly make everything they did ok?

Palpatine: No, it certainly does not. Nor will it justify the things they will do, because allies or not, the Hutts will look after their own purses first and foremost.

Anakin: So do we just let it happen?

Palpatine: Have some faith in me, my boy. I may be old, but I am far from helpless. Just as they have added their own conditions into this treaty, I have added my own. I placed there that a representative from Tatooine/ will be selected to keep watch over the planet and serve as the planet's Senator. You.

Anakin: Me? You want me to become a senator? But I’m a Jedi, and I have no love for the Hutts.

Palpatine: That is precisely why I have selected you. Jabba accepted this idea, thinking that he could buy the representative, but I know you are not someone easily bribed. You also are a resident of the planet, so you fit the criteria. And most importantly, you will be the first to ring the alarms if something goes wrong. As for your position in the military, you will still be allowed to remain a Jedi and a general. Consider this the next planet you must garrison.

Anakin: Will the Hutts allow this?

Palpatine: Oh, I have no doubt that they will wring their hands and denounce you, but I also have faith that you will rise to the occasion, and you do also have the chancellor’s ear.

Anakin: Chancellor, your faith in me…it is very reassuring. Thank you. I will make you proud.

Palpatine also presents this idea to the Jedi Council, and they are less certain. However, when he suggests that this might be a way to teach Anakin responsibility while still having him maximize his role in the military, they eventually give their consent.

Anakin is soon packed off with Ahsoka and the 501st Legion to the Tatooine System. There, the palace previously belonging to Gordula the Hutt is refurbished and set aside for his personal use.

Jabba personally greets Anakin and welcomes him as a brother, promising that they shall be able to work together to deal with the war. He accepts this welcome with a terse nod and begins the process of coordinating their forces with the Hutts.

Anakin sets up supply depots to allow the Republic's supply lines to be less strained while he and Ahsoka join the Hutt’s enforcers to patrol their border regions and remove any CIS forces that are close by. This allows Jabba to expand his influence while the Republic can secure this front with minimum effort.
