9 Reasons to Talk About Atheism

All of us who are passionate about atheism and talk about it publicly know that there are lots of people we will never reach.

Some of you watching this video right now are deeply religious, and there's probably nothing I could say that will change your mind.

So why bother? Why make these videos? Why do any of this?

Here's why:

1) Because there are so many atheists still in the closet.

They're afraid to tell people they're atheists. Sometimes, they're afraid to tell themselves they're atheists.

Maybe they live in the South. Maybe they're afraid of how their family will react. Maybe they worry about losing their jobs. Maybe they're pastors.

But I want to remind them that they're not alone. Others think the same way about God that they do -- and there's nothing wrong with it.

I also realize that not everyone has the ability to do what I'm doing -- to say, out loud, I'm an atheist. But if I can do it, without penalty, why wouldn't I?

2) Because there's a chance that something I say might stick with you.

Especially if you disagree with me, I hope you watch these videos and say at some point, "Okay, he's got a point there."

And maybe that starts happening more often. Eventually, that seed might grow.

Really, isn't that the way we all change our minds on serious issues? We hear someone make a point we never considered before and it makes sense... and we want to hear even more of their thoughts.

I won't deny it: Part of the reason I make these videos is because I want you to shed your faith. But that's not gonna happen with one video. It may not even happen with me at all.

But maybe you watch these videos, and you read The God Delusion, and you talk to some of your atheist friends... there's a chance your might eventually change your mind.

Maybe.

3) Because I enjoy challenging people on a subject most of them have never really thought about.

4) Because I want to change your mind about atheists.

5) Because I'm right.
6) Because we can make a difference.

7) Because religion does a lot of damage.

8) Because if we don't talk about it, nothing will change.
9) Because I learn a lot from talking about atheism publicly
...
