Answering 5 Basic Misconceptions About Evolution

Here's your disclaimer: I'm not a scientist, but I know how to read.

And I've studied evolution enough to know that most of the reasons people don't accept it are based on their own ignorance. They just don't get it.

So let's talk about some of the things they don't get.

1) If evolution is real, why are there still monkeys?

This is a silly question that tells you you're talking to someone who doesn't understand how evolution works.

They're making two big mistakes:

First, they think evolution works with one species evolving into the next one. It's not linear like that.

There's a famous picture you might have seen, called the March of Progress, that shows what looks to be a small primate getting taller and taller until it reaches us.

It's a horrible drawing. Because it's wrong. It's not like humans are the pinnacle of evolution. And it's not like one species turns into another one and dies off.

We're just one branch of a huge tree that is constantly growing.

Second, people who complain that we come from monkeys are suggesting that we must therefore be like monkeys! Wild and uncivil and and hairy and throwing feces everywhere. They're ignoring the fact that we have a very developed brain and we're not just acting on our animal instincts.

The truth is: humans and apes share a common ancestor. That ancestor may look similar to modern-day apes but it's not the same thing.
2) Are we still evolving today? Can one species still change into another?

3) Evolution is just a theory

4) There are no transitional fossils.

5) Evolution and religion are incompatible
...

So there you go. I hope I didn't make any glaring mistakes in that. If I can make a suggestion, Richard Dawkins' The Ancestor's Tale is the book that really opened my eyes to how evolution works. It's easy to read and fascinating. Check it out.
