Dark Cottagecore Vlog 👻 Visiting a Haunted Castle!

This week join me on a dark cottagecore vlog as we explore the history and spirits of Berry Pomeroy Castle, the most haunted castle in the UK. We explore not only the spirits and ghost stories of this haunted castle ruins, this spooky castle is a window into the past and shows how people used to live. We explore the past of ancient britain, and appreciate the autumn beauty of the english countryside. I believe in ghosts. I can’t really tell you why. Maybe it’s from growing up with a grandmother who’d casually talk about the comings and goings of our dearly departed as if she were talking about the weather. “Oh, your great-grandma just sat down behind you,” she’d say over lunch. Or maybe because, in my mind, stranger things have happened. It’s okay if you don’t believe in ghosts. I’m not going to try to convince you. It doesn’t really matter whether or not you believe, anyway. What we all really want is a good story.’

We make our way down a narrow path on a misty autumn day on our journey to Berry Pomeroy castle. it really feels like the start of any good ghost story, and the castle is an imposing force at the end of the lane.

First to explore is the gatehouse, which not only acted as the main defense to the castle, but also housed a small chapel in the corner. You can still see a hint of the original paintings on the wall.

There are two main spirits said to haunt Berry Pomeroy Castle, and with ghosts on the brain we head to the main hangout of ‘The White Lady’ the ghost of Margaret Pomeroy. Having had the misfortune of falling for the same man as her sister, her sister Elinor, jealous of Margaret's beauty, locked her in the basement of one of the guard towers and was left to starve where she is said to haunt to this day.

After giving an offering of kindness to a lonely spirit we made our way to explore the rest of the ruins, the main of which is the main 4 story house, full of bread ovens, meat smokers, and hidden guests…

This estate had it all, from a grand entertaining hall, an inner courtyard, food stores and beer cellars, and plenty of rooms throughout its four floors for our second ghost to roam, The Blue Lady. It’s said that the blue lady was the daughter of a Norman lord who roams the ground in eternal sorrow after smothering her child shortly after birth, as it was sired by her father. She is said to lure passers by up to the tower, where they fall to their death. Her story is tragic in so many ways, and I thank her for letting so many guests share the space and be witness to all the tragedy and beauty a space like this encompasses.

In its current life Berry Pomeroy castle is a space for learning and enjoyment for those around surrounded by beautiful lakes and woods it’s a favourite for families, history buffs, serious ghost hunters, and many folks walking their dogs, and for folks like me who love the place where history, superstition, myth and nature meet.
