In Conversation With … Dr Arvind Pillai

Dr Arvind Pillai, Consultant Haematologist, The Countess of Chester Hospital, who talks to Nona about Interferon. Nona starts by asking Dr Pillai what it is and how effective it is for treating MPNs. Dr Pillai explains that Interferon used as a treatment, is a manmade copy of the interferon which is naturally produced in our bodies by our immune system. He then goes on to talk about how it is used to treat ET and PV, particularly for patients under the age of 60 and that it is a safe option during pregnancy and for those wishing to conceive. It can also be used by people over the age of 60, particularly those who have shown a poor response to other treatments. He also explains about the different slow and fast acting Interferons and how he starts his patients on a low dose, titrating up to achieve a good response, with many patients no longer requiring a weekly dose. He also tells Nona that he is very excited about the development of new treatments and the options that will be available in the future to treat MPN patients.
