Why Pay Over $800 For a 2 in 1 Laptop
There are a vast number of options to choose from when considering a 2 in 1 laptop for your creative needs. Some are cheap, and others not so much. So why should you pay over $800 for a 2 in 1 laptop vs picking up a cheaper model?
Well in this video I am going to put head to head two different 2 in 1 laptops at different price points and talk about which one is right for you.
💻 Acer Spin 5 ( https://geni.us/Spin5-i710 - Commission Earned )
💻 Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 ( https://geni.us/IdeaPadFlex5 - Commission Earned )
Wacom Feel Driver Download - https://us.wacom.com/en/feeldriver/
Lenovo Active Pen 1 (2048 Levels of Pressure Sensitivity) - https://geni.us/ActivePen1
Lenovo Active Pen 2 (4096 Levels of Pressure Sensitivity) - https://geni.us/ActivePen2
Athena Project - https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/docs/devices-systems/laptops/laptop-innovation-program.html
In this head to head battle, the expensive laptop is the Acer Spin 5 and our sub-$800 laptop is the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5.
First, let’s talk about some of the differences in performance and then we will discuss the differences in practical application and build quality.
Acer Spin 5:
CPU: Intel 10th Gen Core i7-1065G7 (4 Cores 8 Threads)
GPU: Intel Iris Plus Graphics G7
RAM: 16GB DDR4
Storage: 512B NVMe SSD
Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 4500U (6 Cores 6 Threads)
GPU: AMD Radeon 6 Graphics (Renoir)
RAM: 16GB DDR4 (Soldered - Not Upgradable)
Storage: 256GB SATA SSD
In Photoshop you can see that the more affordable Flex 5 slightly out-performs the Acer Spin 5 by 23 points on the photoshop benchmark tests.
However, if you’re interested in video editing, the Acer Spin is going to perform better while previewing footage in the timeline and exporting.
While editing 4k footage on a 9 minute project at fourth quality, the Acer Spin only dropped 16 frames whereas the Lenovo Flex 5 dropped 4392. This makes the Acer Spin the go to laptop for smooth video editing.
And concerning export times I am going to take a 9 minute 4k clip and export it out of Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve to 4k and 1080p YouTube settings.
Punch for punch these two laptops are close while conducting a variety of creative professional tasks.
They can both handle video editing, Photoshop, as well as multitasking in Photoshop, Indesign, and Illustrator at the same time. So why pick up the more expensive laptop. If both screens are compatible with a pen and provide a comfortable drawing tablet experience, why make the upgrade.
On the other hand the Acer Spin 5 totes an all-aluminum chassis, which is even more durable and lighter than the Flex 5.
Acer Spin 5:
Weight: 2.65 Lbs
Thickness: 0.59
Lenovo Flex 5:
Weight: 3.3 Lbs
Thickness: 0.82
This allows the Acer spin to be nearly a whole pound lighter and a 14 inch thinner. First point when considering why you may want to buy a more expensive laptop. Better, lighter, stronger---that is what the Spin 5 provides.
What about the on the go capability of these two laptops?
Acer Spin 5 Battery: 56 Wh: 7.25 Hours Web browsing / 5-6 hours Design and Video Editing
Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5: Battery: 52 Wh: 6 Hours Web browsing / 4.25 hours Design and Video Editing
However, things take a shift when you encounter the bright and vibrant screen of the Acer Spin 5. The Acer Spin 5 is nearly twice as the Flex 5. At 425 Nits compared to the Lenovo Flex 5’s 210 nits, it is visibly brighter.
Concerning the color accuracy, the Spin 5 wins again attaining a Color Gamut Range of 100% sRGB - 79% Adobe RGB - 80% DCI-P3 vs the Lenovo Flex 5 with a range of 64% sRGB - 48% Adobe RGB - 48% DCI-P3.
So that extra bit of cash will get you a higher quality screen that is brighter and vastly more color accurate. Now when it comes to the dimensions that’s merely preferential. I have never owned a 3:2 aspect ratio screen found on the Spin 5. I am more familiar with the Flex 5’s 16x9 aspect ratio.
Now onto the most important part of the screen… the touch sensitivity and accuracy of the screen and pen combination. Concerning the Lenovo screen, you can opt to get a pen with 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity using the Active Pen 1 or 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity with the Active Pen 2. I will link both in the Description below.
However, Acer takes it a step further by providing the pen with a built-in charging dock on the right side of the keyboard deck. Not only that but Acer has partnered with Wacom to have their Wacom Feel drivers pre-installed on the Spin 5 giving you an extra level of precision and pen sensitivity.
