Activist arrested in Morjim

Mandrem Police in North Goa have registered an alleged extortion case linked to the Mayfair On The Sea resort property at Morjim, naming Rajesh V. Dabholkar, Advino Fernandes, Praveen D’Lima and others in the complaint. According to sources, the complainant, identified as Paul Dhanraj, alleged that up to ₹5.5 crore was demanded to “settle” issues related to construction activities at the property.

Police sources quoted in local reports also referred to allegations involving threats and illegal drone activity connected to the matter. Rajesh Dabholkar was later taken into custody by Mandrem Police and is expected to be produced before the JMFC court in Mapusa for remand proceedings. The allegations are currently under investigation and the accused are yet to be proven guilty in court.

The case has reignited debate in Goa over the growing number of protests and pressure campaigns surrounding hotels, tourism projects and commercial developments. While genuine activism remains an important part of democracy, business owners across the state have often alleged that some protests begin aggressively and then suddenly disappear without sustained public engagement or legal follow up.

The incident has also triggered conversations on how quickly authorities respond in high profile financial disputes, while several public concerns linked to civic infrastructure, waste management, sewage, road safety and environmental damage are often perceived by citizens as moving at a slower pace.
