The insane fanaticism of Japanese soldiers in WW2 #ww2

By the time of the Second World War, these ideas had permeated throughout every aspect of Japanese society, with every soldier now expected to sacrifice their life for Japan.

The word surrender did not even exist in the Japanese army manual, with Japanese forces frequently choosing to launch suciadal Banzai charges against the American lines, often armed with only bayonets and spears, rather than face the shame of being captured alive. Generals too, just like the samurai of the past, were now expected to commit Seppuku in the face of defeat, being able to retain their honour by taking their life with their own hands.

The Japanese refusal to surrender resulted in most Pacific islands becoming scenes of complete annihilation, where American forces were often forced to eliminate every Japanese soldier, leading to tens or even hundreds of thousands of deaths on each island. Those who didn't join the Banzai charges would hold out for months in underground caves and bunkers, with the intention of sacrificing their life to inflict as many casualties as possible. As soldiers on the island of Iwo Jima were reminded, “kill ten of the enemy before dying.”
