Most of the red berry grapes varieties that are used in contemporary enology in Salento come in all likelihood from the other side of the Adriatic Sea at the hands of the Illyrians, the people from the Balkan region dedicated to the cultivation of vines. When the Greeks subsequently began to colonize southern Italy (VII century BC), spreading their black berry varieties did not penetrate Puglia, this is a sign that black and strong wine already existed here. In fact, even the etymology of the terms related to wine production shows that already in Roman times the word "merum" was also used alongside the word "vinum" to indicate a pure, sincere and strong wine as opposed to the first which indicated the wine mixed with water, honey, resins and other additives to make it more syrupy.
Well, while the word "vinum" entered all the Indo-European languages, the word "merum" remained only in the Apulian dialects, where even today good wine is called "mjier" or "mieru". Why? Evidently the wine that was already being made in Puglia, Salento was not "vinum", but "merum" in the sense of strong, pure, true; that is, good, fine wine. And this since ancient times, before the Romans and the Greeks, when the indigenous peoples perhaps used the word “mir" which in Illyrian (and still today in Albanian) means good, beautiful, well made to indicate their red wine . Therefore, the wines produced from the current grapes’ varieties can be considered the direct descendent of the already known and appreciated wines produced in the lands of Salento already in Roman times, such as the ancient "merum", the historical wine par excellence of Puglia
Today Puglia is among the regions of Italy that stand out for being among those with the greatest production in terms of quantity and quality.
For years the grapes produced in the vineyards of this region, Primitivo and Negroamaro above all, were sent abroad, France most of all, with the aim of giving body to those wines that certainly did not stand out for their structure and body.
And that is why, thanks to passion and vision, we are witnessing a real "rebirth" of Salento winemaking.
Cantina Giuri is a small winery located in Nardò in Salento. Family-run business, the Giuri have been farmers for generations and began the first vinification around the 70s thanks to Gregorio Giuri, born in 1923 who laid the solid foundations for what will be the future Giuri company. The two sons, Silvano and Salvatore, decide to deal exclusively with the production of grapes and winemaking by founding the winery today run together with Pierpaolo, born in 1988, the youngest of the family, excluding Edoardo, his son, who is only 9 months old and potentially the next one in line!!! The company produces wines exclusively from grapes from its own vineyards, which guarantees absolute quality.
