This Tool Can Control Their Falls

It’s one of the simplest — yet most genius — inventions out there.

In the Canary Islands, people use a long, smooth pole to move across steep and rugged terrain. It helps absorb impact, control descents, and even allows them to leap down cliffs or cross areas that would otherwise be impossible.

This technique, known as Shepherd’s Leap, was originally developed by shepherds as a survival tool.

Today, it has evolved into a cultural sport — where balance, timing, and precision turn dangerous terrain into something that looks almost effortless.
