This Is Why Helping Baby Turtles Can Hurt Them

Why don’t people just carry baby sea turtles straight to the ocean? It might seem kinder — but it can actually harm them in the long run.

After hatching, baby Sea Turtles must crawl across the beach to reach the water. The journey is dangerous, with predators like birds and crabs waiting along the way. But that crawl serves an important purpose.

As they move across the sand, the turtles begin imprinting on the beach. They use cues like the Earth’s magnetic field, the sand, and sunlight to build a natural navigation system.

Years later, after traveling thousands of miles through the ocean, the females will return to the exact same beach to lay their own eggs.

So if someone carries them straight to the water, they might survive that moment — but they could lose the ability to find their way home in the future.
