#shorts Crash at Houma-Terrebonne Airport
The story is an electrical fire. Loss off essential bus. EECs high sided. MR and engine overspeed. Also had problems with flight controls. At 6000 feet and 185 and couldn't stop it with full down collective. Controlled aircraft by cycling between idle and fly on engine mode switches. Took 3 laps of airport until able to figure out how to put it down. Killed engines at 200 feet 140 knots on final, high speed flare /auto and dumped it. Collapsed gear, running on belly. Slid into grass.
At approximately 6:14pm on Saturday September 24, 2022 the Houma Fire Department was dispatched to a emergency standby for a aircraft inbound to the Houma-Terrebonne Airport with mechanical issues and smoke in the cockpit. Crews were standing by on scene and waiting when the aircraft was on approach.
A full alarm assignment responded which included two engines, one ladder and a Chief. The aircraft had 6 people onboard for this flight. The helicopter then crashed on the airport runway. After contacting the ground the aircraft slid into a grass area but did remain upright. Emergency units were on scene to the crash site within moments. Rescue crews evacuated all passengers and pilots from the aircraft. Some of those on board did report injuries and were transported to the hospital by Acadian Ambulance.
The aircraft had significant damage and was secured, airport officials, Air traffic control, company officials, and emergency personnel worked together to make sure the scene was safe. The crash is under investigation by the proper authorities. This area of the airport is still closed to aircraft operations. This entire incident occurred inside the property of the Houma-Terrebonne Airport.
