Fake News Crisis in India: A Threat to Unity, Democracy, and National Security

Fake news has become a serious problem in India—it’s now affecting our social harmony, democracy, and even national security. According to a report by the World Economic Forum, India faces the biggest threat from fake news globally. And in the 2025 Press Freedom Index by RSF, India ranks 151st. What’s even more shocking is that around 77% of fake news in India spreads through social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.

Take Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, for example—750 fake posts were taken down and action was taken against 60 accounts. Things got even worse after Operation Sindoor—15 people were arrested in Gujarat for sharing provocative content.

Despite all this, India still doesn’t have strict laws to tackle fake news. With over 950 million internet users, misinformation spreads faster than ever. So the next time you’re about to share something online, pause for a second—think, verify, and report fake news. Because only real news can build a safer, stronger India.
