Hate Speech on the Rise: A Political Weapon or a Digital Menace?

In recent days, leaders of various political parties have been making provocative speeches to stay in the limelight. According to the recently published India Hate Lab report, 688 hate speech incidents were recorded in 2023, which increased to 1,165 in 2024—a dangerous rise of 74%. The highest number of incidents were reported from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. Hate speech was not limited to public platforms; it was also seen on social media. A total of 995 hate speech incidents were either shared for the first time or live-streamed on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. Facebook had the highest number of hate speech posts at 495, but 98% of them are still online. According to the report, while hate speech increased across the country, the southern Indian state of Karnataka saw a 20% decline.
