Take just three notes and turn them into an endless musical practice session. In this piano lesson, Jason Zac from Nathaniel School of Music breaks down the Pendulum Exercise — a simple but powerful concept that develops your rhythm, dynamics, finger independence and musical creativity all at once.

We're working in the key of B major using just B, C# and D#, moving them in a pendulum-like pattern (1-2-3-2-1). The real learning happens when we change how we group these notes — in sets of 3, 4, 5 and even 7 — while keeping the same tempo and pulse. This trains your ear to feel rhythmic accents beyond standard time signatures.

You'll also learn a gorgeous 1-5-6-4 chord progression for the left hand (B – G#m – E – B/F# – F#) with quintal voicings, add2 shapes and smooth inversions. The combination of melodic phrasing in the right hand and harmonic support in the left makes this exercise endlessly musical.

This lesson is perfect for intermediate pianists, singers practising Carnatic or Hindustani swaras, and even guitarists who want to improve their rhythmic phrasing. We also introduce our Pendulum App — a free tool that lets you practise every key, pattern and grouping with a built-in metronome and visual feedback.

📥 Grab the handwritten notes, staff notation and MIDI files on our Patreon. Drop a comment with your favourite grouping, and let us know if you'd like more table-top exercises you can practise away from the piano. Don't forget to hit subscribe and turn on the bell for regular music lessons! 🎹
