When Young Kids Do Hard Time | (Full Prison Documentary)

Prison Documentary: When Young Kids Do Hard Time

In this fully produced documentary film featuring the stories of Miles Folsom and Colt Lundy during their first year in adult prison, we take a look back at where it all began for the boys as they served their first year behind bars as young teens in a maximum-security prison housing 3,000 prisoners. The documentary also features the story of 12-year old Paul Gingerich serving a 25 year prison sentence.

It was 2010 when our Calamari Productions camera crews walked inside Wabash Valley Correctional Facility to begin filming the stories of young kids who had been sentenced to adult prison. Miles and Colt were two of the first kids we met in the prison. We knew nothing about their stories or their crimes when our cameras began to roll.

During filming, we learned all kids who had been sentenced as adults in the state of Indiana were sent to Wabash Valley and placed in the YIA cellblock -- Youth Incarcerated as Adults. By law, juveniles must be sight and sound separated from adult prisoners, so all kids under the age of 18 were housed in this unit. This meant they slept there, ate there, had educational classes there and did recreation separate from other inmates. We documented it all.

This documentary also followed other kids living in the YIA cellblock--kids seen elsewhere on our channel in various interview videos. Overall, the film explores what it's like when kids are sentenced to adult prison, daily life for youth behind bars, extensive interviews with kids in their cells, interviews with correctional officers who work on the YIA cellblock, and how scary it is once kids turn 18 and are immediately transferred to general population in the adult cellblock where thousands of other prisoners await.

Note: Colt was released from prison in 2019 after being granted a sentence modification. Miles was released to Work Release in 2020 after receiving a sentence modification after 12 years behind bars. Paul was released in 2017 after the Indiana Supreme Court ruled unanimously that his case should be remanded back to the juvenile courts for re-sentencing, stating his original lawyer was not given enough time to prepare for trial.
