The Book of Lost Tales Part 1, Session 2 - The Dawning of the Gods

In which Dr. Corey Olsen discussion Chapters 2 & 3 of The Book of Lost Tales, Part 1.

This week, we continue our discussion of the frame story, that of Eriol and his visit to the Cottage of Lost Play, as Tolkien originally conceived it. We then begin looking at the first of the Lost Tales, "The Music of the Ainur," focusing on the story as it appears in its initial form, along with the several versions of the linked poem, "Kortirion among the Trees." Dr. Olsen also explains his argument for why we should approach these stories on their own merits, rather than simply in comparison with the later published versions that appeared in The Silmarillion.
