Volume of a Prism and SOHCAHTOA GCSE Maths Edexcel Higher Tier Paper 3 Monday 8 June 2020 Q9
In this question we have to find the volume of a prism that has a cross section made up of a rectangle and a triangle, and has one line of symmetry.
In order to do this we have to first find the area of the end, which we can find as the area of a compound shape made up of a rectangle attached to a triangle. For the rectangle we just multiply the base by the height. For the triangle we use the fact that it has one line of symmetry to allow us to create two right angle triangles. From this we can use trigonometry to find the height of the triangle, and since we already know the base, we can work out the area. Now we can find the total area of the end and multiply by the length to find the total volume of the Prism.
