Volunteering in Mexico: Language Schools

Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) is a popular job for gringos in Mexico. But you can also help locals learn English without any training as a volunteer. At the Instituto de Inglés América in La Paz, gringos are invited on Friday nights to help locals practice their English language skills. And gringos are invited to speak Spanish.

I've found these "intercambios" to be really helpful for learning Spanish. The same mistakes are made by students of both languages - helping each to understand the differences between the languages.

One more way to learn Spanish: listen to native speakers on YouTube. One of the teachers at the Instituto is a loyal follower of this channel, using my rapid pace English to test his skills.

Attending these meetups is also a great way to make some local friends in Mexico - something gringos often struggle to do.

If you're retired in Mexico (or pretired in Mexico) are you volunteering? Where? Leave comments below.
