1971 Anglo-Italian Cup Final, Bologna v Blackpool (Part 2)

(Film information) This 1971 Anglo-Italian Cup Final, Bologna v Blackpool film was converted from a professional digital format (Digibeta) to DV tape. The black and white recording has been re-edited to include the short segments of colour footage. The audio track has not been edited and is the same sound recording from the original black and white film. The Digibeta conversion was undertaken by SVS Resources and funded by Blackpool FC.

Notes from SVS Resources: The colour footage of the goals are from a highlights edit from "Grandstand" or "Match of the Day". The b/w film recording of the match is clearly of the raw satellite feed along with Barry Davies' commentary which was probably sent separately by phone. You can hear them setting up before they come on line for the match proper.

There is a colour sub-carrier in the video signal which has been captured on the b/w film and may in future be fully transcoded into colour.

1971 Anglo-Italian Cup Final, Bologna v Blackpool includes the entire game, extra-time and trophy presentation.

After only 34 goals in the ill-fated First Division campaign of 1970/71, Blackpool scored 10 goals in just four games in the Anglo-Italian Cup competition in the summer of 1971. With additional points for goals scored, that, together with two wins and a draw, put them into the final against Italian group winners Bologna at the Stadio Comunale.

Alan Suddick had been one of the Blaçkpool stars in their march to the final but the club suffered a blow two days before the final when Suddick turned an ankle in training. Intensive work by the medical staff ensured that he was eventually fit to take his place in a line-up that was Burndge, Hatton, Alcock, Suddaby, Bentley, Ainscow, Green, Suddick, Burns, Craven and Hutchison.

Seasiders supporters made up only a small element of the 42,000 crowd on a scorching hot June day and with the kick-off at two o’clock the heat was at its most intense. Although Bologna kicked off, it was Blackpool who threatened first with Bill Bentley sending a cross just over the crossbar before Savoldi got in the first shot of the match that was cleared at the expense of the game’s first corner.

Bologna pressed early on and Scala had the first on-target attempt before Savoldi’s delight at steering the ball into the net was short-lived as he was given off-side. Bentley replied with a 30-yard effort that went just over the bar and after half-an-hour’s fierce play there was still no score.
But a minute later the deadlock was broken. Terry Alcock blocked a goalbound shot that rebounded to Savoldi who slipped the ball to Bruno Pace who in turn neatly sidestepped Bentley and drifted the ball past John Burridge from 15 yards.

It was 1-0 to Bologna at half-time but 16 minutes into the second half Blackpool, who had been prompted by the magic of Suddick, Tony Green and Tommy Hutchison, equalised. Bologna failed to clear a chip from Suddick and Dave Hatton put the ball back into the danger area where John Craven played a one-two with Bentley and then fired home to make it 1-1. Tiredness took its toll thereafter but with Peter Suddaby outstanding in the centre of defence, at full time there was no further scoring so an extra half-an-hour was necessary.

The deciding goal came after 99 minutes when Dennis Wann, on for Alan Ainscow, played a delightful 30-yard pass with his first touch of the ball. It wrong-footed three Bologna players and found Micky Burns on the left wing. He cut inside, weaved past two defenders and drove a swerving shot past a helpless Vavassori and into the roof of the net from 25 yards out.

Thereafter Blackpool held on to what they had and deservedly won 2-1, a feat cheered to the echo by a sporting home crowd when the team did their lap of honour. And later Football League secretary Alan Hardaker heaped praise on Blackpool as he told reporters, “They have made a lot of friends in Italy by their behaviour both on and off the field. Wherever I have gone in the last 48 hours, everybody has been delighted with Blackpool By their efforts they have been England’s finest ambassadors in football and tremendous ambassadors of The Football League.
