Blackpool can dare to dream. After spending 40 years outside the top flight, including a spell in the Football League's lowest division within the last decade, Ian Holloway's side are 90 minutes away from the Premier League. A splendid second-half hat-trick from DJ Campbell, who is on loan from Leicester City and will be unable to play in the play-off final if his parent club get through against Cardiff City on Wednesday night, swept Nottingham Forest aside to earn a trip to Wembley.

It was a breathtaking display of counter-attacking from a fearless Blackpool team whose confidence never wavered even when Robert Earnshaw scored in the seventh minute to put Forest level on aggregate. Campbell stole the show with his excellent finishing but the part Stephen Dobbie played should not be underestimated. The substitute, on loan from Swansea, scored Blackpool's vital second after Earnshaw had struck again and then created two of Campbell's goals.

Dele Adebola grabbed a late consolation to make the scoreline look more respectable but there was no way back for Forest who could have been forgiven for fearing the worst from the moment they were paired with Blackpool. Holloway's team had already completed the double over Forest in the league this season and they have now repeated that trick in the play-offs with the sort of swashbuckling performance that suggests they will make formidable opponents at Wembley.

For Campbell this was a night to cherish. The striker, who remains on bail after he was arrested at the start of last month in connection with a stabbing incident in London, took his tally to 11 goals in 15 league appearances since arriving at Bloomfield Road with the first hat-trick of his professional career. "He looks good in our colours," said Holloway of a player who has had a nomadic career since joining Birmingham from Brentford in 2005.

"Sometimes you go to a place and it doesn't suit you for whatever reason but this club seems to suit him," said the Blackpool manager. "He's still contracted to Leicester next year. I am just very privileged that they let me borrow him. I don't think DJ deserves not to play in the final but I am sure Leicester will have something to say about that if they get there. They quite rightly put a little clause in that he can't play against them."

Holloway said it was "beyond my wildest dreams" that Blackpool would score four against a Forest side that had gone eight matches at home without conceding before this absorbing tie. Their first goal, after Earnshaw put Forest in front with a low shot across Matt Gilks, came when Campbell deftly lifted the ball over Lee Camp. Back came Forest when Earnshaw swept home from close range but that was the cue for Blackpool's late onslaught.

Dobbie's deflected shot eluded Camp and four minutes later he set up Campbell to curl in a third. Forest were in a state of shock but Campbell was not finished, the striker finishing powerfully after Camp had parried Dobbie's shot. Holloway praised the Forest fans who applauded Blackpool off at the end, leaving Billy Davies to reflect on a night when the shortcomings of his callow side were ruthlessly exposed. "Blackpool thoroughly deserved it," said Forest's manager. "We showed a great deal of naivety and inexperience."
