The brain disease behind a Rock Hill tragedy: What doctors found 5 years later

Five years after former NFL player Phillip Adams shot and killed six people in Rock Hill before taking his own life, a brain injury specialist says the tragedy should serve as a catalyst for deeper public education about chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.

Adams' autopsy revealed severe brain damage consistent with CTE, a neurodegenerative disease linked to repeated head trauma. His family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the NFL and South Carolina State University, alleging that head injuries led to his condition. A South Carolina judge denied the NFL's request to dismiss the case in January.

Dr. Kelli Uitenham, founder of the Brain Talk Foundation, said Adams' reported concussions — sustained within two to three weeks of each other during his playing career — illustrate how cumulative damage can go undetected for years. #News #CTE #Health
