Christopher Alexander: pattern languages are for communities

Christopher Alexander tells the story behind his original motivation for a pattern language.

Even when an architect or planner is sensitive, well-informed, iterative, etc. ... they should NOT be the driver of a project. The community needs to be. What tools could help the community? Alexander felt that a 'pattern language' could help.

Recorded in 1993 at the University of Oregon ...

He also mentions that The Oregon Experiment began when the work on pattern languages was about halfway done.
