Before You Dig Your Drain Trench Watch This

Before you pick up that shovel there are a few things you need to know that will save you a lot of extra work and a backyard full of dirt you have nowhere to put.

Here is what most DIYers do not think about before they start digging. The pipe you choose determines how much dirt you have left over. A 4 inch pipe displaces a lot more area than you think. By the time you dig deep enough and wide enough to lay it properly you are going to have significantly more dirt than you can get back in that trench. And that dirt has to go somewhere.
This is why we use 3.5 inch pipe. Shallower trench. Less dirt. Less labor. And it handles three downspouts on one line without losing any performance.

A few things to keep in mind before you dig. Put something on your grass to pile the dirt on before you start — tarps, plywood, anything to protect the lawn and keep the dirt contained. Keep your trench shallow — start as high as you possibly can at the house so you have maximum slope as you go. And size your pipe correctly for your downspouts before you ever break ground.
Dig it right the first time and the install goes smoothly. Dig it wrong and you are moving dirt twice.
