Best French Drain Done Right
This is what a properly built French drain looks like from the inside out — every layer, every component, every decision explained by a contractor who has built thousands of them.
Two perforated corrugated pipes. Not one. Two. Corrugated because the holes run 360 degrees around the entire pipe — something PVC can never do. PVC is too brittle, too rigid, and the perforations are limited. Corrugated pipe pulls water in from every direction and gets it moving.
The entire system — both pipes and all the stone — is fully encapsulated in nonwoven geotextile filter fabric. Not a weed barrier. Not a cheap substitute. The right fabric. This is the soil separator that keeps the clay from migrating into the stone and plugging the voids. Those voids in the stone are what move the water to the pipe. Plug them with dirt and the system stops working. It is that simple. The guys who want to argue this point have no argument — they are just building systems that fail.
Sand goes on top of the fabric before the sod goes back down. Two to three inches minimum. This is what allows the system to capture surface water as well as subsurface water. Skip the sand and put clay sod directly back on top of the fabric and you just cut your system's effectiveness in half.
And when the crew is done — sod cut in manageable pieces, puzzle fit back together, edges worked tight so they do not burn, leaf blower to fluff the grass back up — you cannot even tell they were there.
This is what a French drain looks like when it is built to last for decades.
