These 8 steps will work for any vehicle; follow the steps to set up the vehicle in preparation to learn how to drive.

1) Key
2) Seat
3) Seatbelt
4) Mirrors
5) Dash
6) Vents
7) Brake
8) Locks

1) Place the key in the ignition; therefore, you will know where it is and you can locate it easily. If your jurisdiction does not allow the key to be in the ignition, put it in one of the cubbies that is easily accessible.

2) The seat is 2 pieces, The bottom piece should be adjusted so that the your foot easily touches the floor behind the brake pedal. And there should be slight bend in the knee.

The back of the driver's seat should be adjusted so that when you have both hands on the steering wheel at the 9 and 3 position, there is a slight bend in the elbows. And you should be sitting--at minimum--25 centimetres from the steering wheel in the event that the air bag deploys.

The head restraint should be adjusted so that the top is in line with the top of the driver's ears.

3) The seatbelt must be fastened. It is law now in most places in the world. The lap portion should be over the hips and low. The shoulder strap should be over the shoulder and not rubbing against your neck. Most vehicles have a height adjustment on the seat belt.

4) Adjust the centre mirror so that the top of the mirror is lined up with the top of the rear window. In the driver's side of the mirror you should be able to see just a tiny bit of your head.

The two outside mirrors on the vehicle should be adjusted so that you can see just a tiny bit of the vehicle on the inside of the mirror. And the horizon should be across the centre of the mirror. Adjusting for the horizon in the mirror may take some practice, but essentially the horizon is where the ground meets the sky.

5) There shouldn't be anything--sunglasses, tissue boxes, paper, etc--on the dash that could potentially fly off and cause a distraction. As well, there shouldn't be anything on the rear window ledge either. In the event of a crash, a tissue box has the the same impact as a brick, and could potentially cause serious injury to the vehicle occupants.

6) The two outer vents should be pointed to the outside of the vehicle and vertically at the mid-point. The two centre vents should be pointed to the centre of the vehicle with one pointed vertically up and the other vertically down. This arrangement of the vent will provide optimum circulation in the vehicle, and in the winter the best arrangement for maximum defrosting.

7) Push the brake pedal all the way to the floor with your right foot; you should be able to put the toe of your left foot under the brake pedal. And when you depress the brake pedal, it should not drop farther after it stops. If it either stops or your cannot fit your toe under the brake pedal, take it to a mechanic and have the brakes check by a qualified person.

8) Most modern vehicles will lock the doors automatically after attaining a slow speed. Still, it is a good practice to lock the doors before departing. If you are involved in a crash, the locked doors will ensure your safety by keeping the doors closed and maintaining the integrity of the vehicle. In other words, the vehicle is stronger with the doors closed. As well, locked doors keep you in and thieves out.
